Frederick County, Maryland, founded in 1748, is located in the north central part of Maryland, is 664 square miles in area, and serves an estimated population of 293,391. Frederick County is bordered on the north by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, on the west by Washington County, Maryland, and on the east by Howard and Carroll Counties, both in Maryland, and on the south by Montgomery County, Maryland and the Commonwealth of Virginia. There are twelve incorporated municipalities within Frederick County.
The County seat and largest city is the city of Frederick, which has an estimated population of 82,175. The City of Frederick is located approximately 45 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. and 45 miles west of Baltimore, Maryland. The County provides a wide range of services to enhance the quality of life for its citizens. Services include fire and rescue; law enforcement; sanitation (including water, sewer, solid waste and residential recycling); construction and maintenance of highways, streets and infrastructure; recreational facilities: comprehensive care services (skilled nursing and assisted living facility); and general governmental activities.
